I’m Shelley, the designer and founder behind the brand. At Shelley Physick, we believe that fashion is a powerful form of self-expression, and our creations blend art, culture, history and lived experiences into beautiful items that are crafted with love and care. We design and make luxury products that combine timeless beauty and rich artistic inspiration, whilst keeping sustainable fashion practices at the heart of everything we do.
My journey into the world of design started with a love for art, culture and languages. I studied Modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge University, where my academic passion for literature and culture sparked a lifelong curiosity about how social and historical events shape our forms of cultural and artistic expression.
After completing my university studies, I pursued a career in teaching and developed my artistic skills as a hobby. However, as I explored my creative side and experimented with lots of different disciplines, I realised that art and fashion was my true calling. As well as enjoying the process behind designing and making clothes, I discovered that I was able to address a longstanding problem that I had encountered all too often when looking to purchase items of clothing for myself. Our clothes are an outer expression of our inner personalities, but, whilst out shopping, I became increasingly aware of how similar and lacklustre a great deal of mass-produced clothes can be. On the occasions when I did happen upon something a little different, I would often find that the fabrics were not high quality and thus, the garments would not always look good after a few washes, despite their high price tag.
My designs take inspiration from the rich heritage and artistry of cities like London and Paris, and are typically infused with my personal love for colour, and classical and contemporary art. My ideas are then refined continually through sketching, collage, and extensive research. I seek out the finest fabrics and materials, ensuring that each piece feels luxurious and is built to last.
We firmly believe in the importance of ethical and sustainable luxury, which is why we only produce small runs of each item. Some of our products are only made to order. This cuts down on the waste from over-production and allows us to offer you highly unique, limited-edition pieces, where each one is designed and made here in North West London. We also make conscious choices about the packaging of our items, ensuring that our designs are as kind to the planet as they are to you.
This led me to complete several fashion design courses, where I honed my skills in textile and garment design, pattern cutting, colour theory and fashion history. Through these courses, I learned the technical aspects of creating exquisite, wearable designs that are rich in meaning. Armed with a passion for fashion and a desire to create something special, I set up my brand so that I could create high-quality, distinctive items at a price point that is more accessible than traditional luxury fashion.
